Latest from Australia - Victoria child protection in crisis: report
by sizemik incheck the following links .
the storm isn't over for wts.. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-28/victoria-child-protection-in-crisis-report/3858454.
people working in religious organisations should be legally required to report suspected sexual or physical abuse of a young person by members in that group, except if that information is received during confession, the report says.. an investigation should also be launched into how religious groups respond to child abuse perpetrated by people within their ranks.. http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-national/overhaul-child-protection-in-vic-inquiry-20120228-1u0j6.html.

Emotional blackmail
by The Quiet One inif you have the watchtower cd-rom, try this.. do a 'sentence scope' search for the words 'your life', then look at the results under 'books'.
i was surprised at how much emotional blackmail as well as veiled threats seem to be in some of the books, even towards your children only surviving into the paradise if you do what jehovah (they) say/s, as in indoctrinate them in the truth.. never noticed this before..

Theists, why does God allow suffering..
by The Quiet One in..specifically, the suffering of animals.
you can talk about free will/sin/people choosing to not listen to god etc to explain human suffering being allowed.. but how can you love a god that allows animals, that haven't sinned or chosen to not have anything to do with god, to have their short lives ended in often long, drawn out, painful ways.
i could list stories i've read that would probably make you feel ill, but i'm not looking to shock anyone or start an emotional debate.

"I will destroy ... both man and beast." God is angry. He decides to destroy all humans, beasts, creeping things, fowls, and "all flesh wherein there is breath of life." He plans to drown them all. Genesis 6:7 , 17 3. "Every living substance that I have made will I destroy." God repeats his intention to kill"every living substance ... from off the face of the earth." But why does God kill all the innocent animals? What had they done to deserve his wrath? It seems God never gets his fill of tormenting animals. Genesis 7:4 4. "All flesh died that moved upon the earth." God drowns everything that breathes air. From newborn babies to koala bears -- all creatures great and small, the Lord God drowned them all. Genesis 7:21-23 http://yahoo.infogin.com/GJEGLVMQFONQNTRUFQDT/us/en/ig8del/lnk000/=skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelty/long.html

should child abusers be allowed to go door to door
by soft+gentle ini'd like to work toward ensuring that the wts bans pedophiles from sharing in the door to door work out of consideration for the public.
i'd like to ensure that this ban applied not just to those who have been convicted of pedophile activities but also to those who have secretly confessed to elders.
would this subject be appropriate for an e-petition?

I know it was a dumb idea, I was just brainstorming and part way through thinking about religious representatives/all cold callers being made to wear ID badges, I realised that they'd say ' Jw's are not representatives ' etc.. and they already ignore cold caller signs for some reason. Trying to think of the right wording for any law related to a 'personal ministry' that isn't selling anything seems impossible. Sorry for throwing out the 1st stupid thing that came to mind..

To me.. Evolution is part of Gods plan+God cares about animals = contradiction. Think of the species that have died out, or suffered because they couldn't adapt. Would any believers care to admit that God probably doesn't care about animals?

ROB-- I'm not talking about why animals don't live forever, I don't even expect to live forever. You seem to have missed my point. For instance.. Even I, as a wicked nonbeliever who dares to question God, am comfortable with the idea of dying, provided I go peacefully/instantly without SUFFERING or dying a long drawn out death..I don't think that I deserve such pain, I've never hurt anyone.. I have even more of a problem with innocent animals, who have never sinned and merely follow instinct (the way they were 'designed') being ripped to shreds by lions, dying slowly and painfully due to illness/cancers/parasites etc. MEDIATOR007-- Great point. As much as I used to like Jesus, that verse never sat well with me. DONUTHOLE-- Interesting post.. What I would point out though is that we're not talking about humans being allowed to kill animals, according to the Bible they were provided as food anyway, so most believers have no issue with that. I'm glad that the question has made you think, I thought at first that this topic would be ignored by many people.. COFTY-- Thanks again..Please keep such fascinating examples coming.

Thanks to Botchtower particularly for bringing out something I hadn't considered. Maybe they don't experience exactly the same level of suffering, in terms of distress.. I have no idea. But animals do cry out in pain, as well as displaying fear towards people/things that have caused them pain.. that much I do know. Chalam: Thanks for replying. I expected that answer. How would you explain the suffering that occurred in the creatures that existed before mankind were created then?

Just thinking about Avengers post... How about petitioning those in power to enforce a law whereby anyone who either goes door-to-door or publicly distributes literature (including leaflet distributors and postmen etc. if need be, due to technicalities such as Jw's not being salesmen/representatives and so on..) must wear a badge (as the Mormons do, not that that's relevant) with at least their full name displayed.. Then, using Megans Law in the US or any equivalent in other countries, the householder could at least look Jw's names up to see if they have a conviction.. Or better still, make them have a CRB pass displayed on the badge in the UK if they have one.. Probably a bit of a pie in the sky idea, but I read somewhere even authors going into a school need to get a background check just to read to a large group of children, on a one-off basis with virtually no chance of being alone with a child! Let alone regular visits to the childs home (if it's a return visit or bible study). To be honest, I don't think the government in UK or US would do anything though..
